This is the infrastructure side of The New Atlas: virtualization, networking, self-hosted services, monitoring, backups, and the ongoing work of making the lab more secure, useful, and understandable over time.
AN EVOLVING ENVIRONMENT.
The home lab is not a finished showcase. It is a working environment where systems get added, redesigned, broken, repaired, documented, and improved. The goal is less about chasing perfect hardware and more about learning how the pieces fit together.
Compute & Virtualization
Proxmox hosts provide the foundation for virtual machines and services, making it possible to separate workloads, test new systems, recover from mistakes, and expand the lab without turning every experiment into a dedicated physical machine.
Network & Segmentation
The network is treated as part of the lab itself: managed switching, wireless infrastructure, VLAN segmentation, controlled access between device groups, and ongoing work to balance usability with stronger isolation and security.
Self-Hosted Services
Websites, communication tools, identity services, documentation, remote-access tools, monitoring platforms, and other applications live here because running them is part of the learning process—not just the end result.
Monitoring, Backup & Resilience
The lab is gradually becoming easier to observe and recover: service monitoring, health dashboards, backup systems, status displays, and alerting all help turn a collection of machines into something that can actually be operated and maintained.
BUILT TO CHANGE.
New hardware, better monitoring, cleaner rack organization, stronger segmentation, and improved documentation are all part of the current direction. What appears here will change as the lab changes.
